Special feature - Tyler Perry - a true business pioneer

Tyler Perry

His story started from humble beginnings. Born in New Orleans, he adored his mother but has had a challenging relationship with his father, who abused his mother.

He was first inspired by Oprah to start writing. He wrote plays and initial failed to make them a commercial success. It took him 6 more years to have a commercial success. Then he turned to TV and started to make even more money, then went into films.

Tyler Perry was included in Time's list of the 100 most influential people of 2020.  He was co-honoured with a special award at the 93rd Academy Awards (2021).  He went from being homeless to become a force as a filmmaker to now being honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, he was inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame

What makes Tyler Perry special is his dedication to give African-Americans, in front and behind the scenes, access to make films, TV shows and much more. He also donates money to many Black people and causes, including to help alleviate homelessness.

Net worth $1billion

Tyler Perry Studios

The first African-American to own a major film studio outright. It is one of the largest movie production facilities in America. The studio is larger than the studio lots of Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony and Warner Brothers, with acres to spare. Black Panther was filmed there and all 12 purpose built sound stages / studios are named after African-American stars.
